Village Voice Reaches Tentative Agreement Ahead of Strike Posted: 01 Jul 2011 06:34 AM PDT TBT - It appears that the Village Voice won't be moving to Tumblr after all — employees reached a tentative agreement with management Thursday evening. In a post on the Voice's renegade Tumblr, Graham A. Rayman, a staff writer and union spokesperson, wrote, "We have reached a tentative agreement that is going to be presented to the membership for their approval in the morning." Discussion is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. ET. Editor in Chief Tony Ortega told The Washington Post that both sides had come to an agreement on their biggest priorities. "Our number one concern was that the Voice employees join the same healthcare plan as the rest of the company. Their top concern seemed to be that VVM continue to pay their health premiums. Both of those things happened," he said. Employees were planning to go on strike when their contracts expired at midnight June 30, citing salary cuts and declining benefits. Instead of stopping the presses, however, staff pledged to produce content and publish it directly to Tumblr, where Village Voice Media couldn't make any money — i.e. sell ads — off of it. We will update this post after the new contracts are put to vote. [via - mashable] |
